Penn Room 2

Details

This session will highlight innovative projects exploring the geothermal resource potential of mine waters for heating, cooling, and energy storage applications. Contributions will showcase how abandoned mine infrastructures are being transformed into valuable geothermal assets, supporting decarbonisation and regional energy security goals. Techno-economic analyses, operational challenges or legislative framework… will be addressed. Discussion will be supported by field experiments, case studies or large-scale pilot projects demonstrating practical implementation across. Overall, this session will demonstrate how mine water geothermal and Mine Thermal Energy Storage (MTES) systems are advancing from conceptual feasibility to real-world implementation. It will showcase how reusing former mining infrastructure can contribute to climate-neutral energy systems while creating new value for post-mining regions and supporting the EU’s objective to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
