Details

CO2 Monitoring is a critical component of safe, effective, and publicly accepted CO₂ storage project. With the global deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) accelerating, robust monitoring frameworks are essential to ensure containment integrity, verify storage performance, and support regulatory compliance. This session brings together experts from industry, academia, and research institutions to share insights into the current state of CO₂ storage monitoring, recent advancements in technology, and lessons learned from operational projects. Speakers will explore a wide range of monitoring technologies, both established and emerging. Emphasis will be placed on how these technologies are applied in different geological settings: such as saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, onshore-offshore, and how monitoring strategies are tailored to specific site characteristics and risk profiles. The session will also highlight key lessons learned from real-world CCS projects. Discussions will cover the importance of baseline data, integration of multiple datasets, early detection of anomalies, and the evolution toward risk-based and adaptive monitoring frameworks. Cost-effectiveness, data management, and regulatory alignment will be addressed as ongoing challenges. Attendees will gain a comprehensive overview of the current state of CO₂ storage monitoring, future directions in technology development, and how field experience continues to shape best practices across the CCS industry.
