Northern Lights is a pioneering CO₂ transport and storage initiative designed to support the decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries such as cement, waste-to-energy, fertilizer, and bio-energy. As the first of its kind, the project has navigated uncharted territory, aiming to building a new industry in the absence of an established, mature market. From feasibility to operations, the journey has offered critical insights into infrastructure development, stakeholder collaboration, and regulatory frameworks.
Key challenges included creation of an investable concept, managing execution during the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical disruptions and the consequences to e.g. supply chain. The project also highlights the importance of long-term frameworks for carbon pricing and policy alignment, especially in a world balancing industrial competitiveness, climate goals, and security concerns. A suite of learning will be explored, many of which stem from action—those who don’t try, don’t learn.
