Depleted hydrocarbon fields are high-priority assets for CO2 storage. Detailed geological knowledge and experience from the production phase create an excellent starting point for the development of a storage site. However, the reservoir pressure after production can be very low, resulting in a large pressure difference with the conditions in the transport system. Bridging this pressure gap while ensuring safe temperature levels throughout the injection and storage system is a real challenge.
This session presents technical solutions that have been found by several storage projects. Depending on the specifics of the depleted field, the targeted injection rate and other factors, project developers have found multiple ways of bringing the CO2 from transport conditions to reservoir conditions and managing the associated cooling to acceptable levels. Project developers present the set-up of their system, focusing on how the elements of their system and the injection concept work together to develop a safe injection system.
The line-up demonstrates that the list of injection system concepts and injection system elements for safe injection into (ultra-)depleted fields is growing. Future developers of depleted fields for storage can select the solution that best fits their requirements. The session opens with a presentation of the principles behind the challenge of storing CO2 in (ultra-)depleted fields.
