Details

The integration and co-location of Offshore Wind Farms (OWF) with other energy infrastructures like Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) and hydrogen storage, present a promising pathway toward a decarbonized energy system. These synergies offer multiple benefits. OWFs provide abundant, renewable electricity that can beneficiate both CCS and hydrogen storage sites. Co-location reduces infrastructure costs by sharing grid connections, platforms, and pipelines, and enhances energy system flexibility by balancing intermittent wind power with storable hydrogen and dispatchable CCS-enabled generation. However, several challenges must be addressed. Technical integration requires harmonizing different operational timelines and pressure regimes, especially for hydrogen storage in geological formations. Regulatory frameworks are often fragmented, lacking coordination across sectors and jurisdictions. Environmental and spatial planning concerns also arise, as offshore areas become increasingly crowded with competing uses. Despite these hurdles, coordinated planning and policy support can unlock the full potential of OWF-CCS-hydrogen synergies, accelerating the transition to a resilient, low-carbon offshore energy ecosystem. This dedicated session will aim to address some of these key strategical and technological benefits and challenges.
