Details
This session aims at creating a discussion over the geothermal development of active volcanic insular systems. Geologically, these volcanic systems are commonly young and can lack the specificities that more mature systems have developed through time. Furthermore, these islands rely heavily on energy importation or fossil-fuel-based power generation. Consequently, the development of geothermal energy will aid in securing a locally and sustainably produced energy supply. The combination of a challenging resource and a strong interest for its usage make these environments of strong interest with key geoscience challenges to overcome.
The session will feature three technical presentations that describe case studies from different regions and the corresponding efforts to identify geothermal systems. After these presentations, a panel discussion will be held with active participation of the audience. The discussion will focus on the exploration strategies to support the development of these systems and the necessary requirements for the effective utilization of geothermal energy in the context of young volcanic island environments. The presentations will cover cases where the exploration and development of resources are at various stages, making the comparison and discussion more engaging.
