CO2 containment risk assessment has been at the heart of subsurface work for CCS project maturation in Europe. Due to the offshore focus of CCS in Europe, brine migration risks have received less focus in comparison to the US and Canada onshore, where protection of drinking water has been at the heart of CCS permitting.
This dedicated session will explore brine migration risks in pressured aquifers in general. As mature basins are repurposed onshore and offshore, the movement of pressurized formation fluids, particularly brine, represents more than a monitoring or regulatory problem, they can be a threat to reservoir performance, to the environment and to drinking water resources and as such may pose a significant post-injection financial liability. The session aims to encompass a range of topics:
(1) How geological features and legacy well leakage paths of least resistance can compromise CCS injection sites through drinking water contamination and/or through aquifer re-equilibration
(2) Calculation and modelling methods to quantify the risk of brine migration leakage and cross-flow in legacy well, and challenges thereof
(3) Actionable (monitoring) strategies for asset life-extension and/or possible proactive remediation approaches.
