From Petroleum to New Energies: How Process Modeling Supports Exploration in New Energy Related Subsurface Systems

Biography

Thomas Hantschel is a physicist with focus on basin modeling simulators related to geothermal, geomechanical, geochemical and geo-fluid flow processes. He has worked as a peer reviewer for more than 100 exploration projects and applications world-wide related to Petroleum Systems Modeling and Geomechanics. Thomas Hantschel is principal author of the book “Fundamentals of Basin and Petroleum Systems Modeling”. Thomas Hantschel was the center manager of the Schlumberger Technology Center for Petroleum Systems Modeling and Exploration Geology, in Aachen, Germany. He has directed the product development of the geoscientific modeling software PetroMod for more than 20 years. PetroMod is the market leading software for Petroleum Systems Modeling and it is used to find new oil and gas fields in more than 100 oil companies. Thomas is currently working as a managing director of Terranta GmbH, specializing in geological process modeling for mineral systems modeling, geological storage solutions and non-hydrocarbon energy exploration such as geothermal applications and natural hydrogen.

Basin Modelling workflow adapted for the screening of geological hydrogen plays: Kansas and Perth application cases

Biography

Dr Adriana Lemgruber-Traby is a geological engineer and research scientist, specialized in basin and petroleum system modelling, with 20 years of experience across industry and R&D. At IFP Energies nouvelles, she leads the research and development of basin modeling tools (TemisFlow, Arctem), extending their use from petroleum systems to natural hydrogen systems, geothermal energy, lithium rich brines, and geological carbon storage. Her background spans pore-pressure prediction, regional and prospect scale modeling, and complex petroleum systems gained at PUC-Rio, PGT/Vale Óleo e Gás, Beicip Franlab and IFPEN. Adriana also supervises postdoctoral researchers, PhD and master’s students, and teaches basin modeling at IFP School and Sorbonne Université.
