Speaker

Dr Sascha Doering
Geological Advisor
Eni S.p.A. E&P

Selecting the “right” sample for compositional kinetics from a thick source rock succession

Biography

S. Doering graduated with a M.Sc. in Geology Paleontolgy from the University of Cologne (Germany) in 1998 and completed his Ph.D. in Geology at the University of Tuebingen (Germany) in 2002. He then joined Wintershall in Germany as a geology trainee for two years and subsequently became specialist in petroleum systems and basin modelling. In 2012 he left Wintershall and joined Eni in Italy to continue to work in his specialist role until 2020 when he became head of the geological laboratories of Eni. In 2025 he rejoined the Eni basin modelling group continuing to work in this domain as a geological advisor.
Abdulmonem Belaid
National Oil Corporation Libya

Thermal Maturity, and Bulk Kinetics of Lower Silurian Hot Shale, Northern Murzuq Basin, SW Libya

Biography

Biography – Dr. Abdulmonem Belaid Dr. Abdulmonem Belaid is a petroleum geologist and researcher specializing in petroleum geology, organic geochemistry, source-rock characterization, thermal maturity, and petroleum systems modelling. He holds a Ph.D. in Petroleum Geology from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, where his doctoral research focused on the petroleum geology, geochemical characterization, and numerical petroleum systems modelling of the Murzuq Basin in southwestern Libya. Dr. Belaid has extensive research experience in the evaluation of Palaeozoic petroleum systems, with particular emphasis on the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation "Hot Shale", the principal source rock of the Murzuq Basin. His research integrates Rock-Eval pyrolysis, Total Organic Carbon analysis, organic petrography, vitrinite-like particle reflectance, fluorescence microscopy, bulk and kinetic analysis, thermal maturity assessment, and one-dimensional basin modelling. His scientific work has contributed to understanding the thermal history, source-rock quality, hydrocarbon generation potential, and petroleum-system evolution of the Murzuq Basin. He has published and contributed to studies in international petroleum-geology literature, including research on the Awbari Trough and Tanezzuft Hot Shale. Dr. Belaid has professional experience in the Libyan oil and gas sector and has contributed to petroleum exploration and source-rock evaluation. His expertise covers petroleum systems analysis, hydrocarbon generation and expulsion, and Palaeozoic petroleum geology.
Pieter Van Rensbergen
Seephunter

Making offshore seep sampling reliable: Lessons from contrasting surveys in the same license area, offshore Colombia

Biography

Pieter is an expert in hydrocarbon migration and seepage with more than 20 years of experience, in academia and industry . He started the Seephunter program in Shell in 2013 to support exploration with data gleaned from migration and seepage, later expanding the application to field development and CCUS. Since 2026 he founded Seephunter.com to provide this specialist support for petroleum migration, seepage and leakage to the Oil & Gas industry. He is also co-founder of Marine Geoscience Exploration to organize and execute seep sampling surveys.
