Details

Field Trip Leader: Prof. Claudio Scarpati, Professor of Vulcanology at the University of Naples Federico II This field trip will explore the active Campi Flegrei caldera, a 12 km-wide volcanic field characterised by an almost circular structure enclosing numerous volcanic edifices. These include tuff cones, diatremes, tuff rings, and a few lava domes. Due to its highly explosive behaviour and dense urbanisation, Campi Flegrei is considered one of the most hazardous volcanic systems in the world. Currently, the caldera exhibits renewed activity, evidenced by hydrothermal anomalies, increased seismicity, and significant ground uplift centred in the town of Pozzuoli. This ongoing unrest highlights the dynamic nature of the volcanic system. Beyond its geological significance, the area also preserves several Roman structures that bear witness to the volcano-tectonic activity of the past 2,000 years. The landscape of Campi Flegrei is defined by a volcano-tectonic depression, with its southern portion submerged beneath the Pozzuoli Gulf. Along this coastline lies the historical neighbourhood of Rione Terra, offering a striking example of the interplay between human settlement and volcanic processes.
