Michael is Head of Viridien Satellite Mapping, where he oversees Viridien’s global Earth observation (EO) activities and provides leadership and strategic direction to a specialist team with more than 50 years’ experience developing and delivering world-leading satellite remote sensing solutions. Michael has a background in geology and remote sensing, and more than 20 years of commercial EO experience. During his career, he has led and contributed to a wide range of operational and research and development projects for public and private-sector clients. His work spans diverse markets including energy, mining, engineering, environment and government. He combines strong technical knowledge with broad management capability, including finance, people leadership, business planning and strategy development. His technical expertise includes the application of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data and optical remote sensing, including hyperspectral and multispectral imagery, with particular focus on geological mapping and natural resource applications. Michael has also managed projects involving the use of satellite radar for the detection and monitoring of shoals; the creation of Seep Explorer, Viridien’s onshore and offshore seepage database; satellite-based offshore asset and environmental monitoring; and the monitoring of plastics in the marine environment for the European Space Agency (ESA).
