EAGE Student Webinar on An investigation of natural processes influencing surface seawater pH dynamics by Richard Rosas
on 21 January 2026 at 16-17 CET
OutlineThis talk involves the use of in-situ sensors to characterize surface seawater pH and tounderstand how natural cycles influence its variability. While much research has focused on thepotential anthropogenic impacts on surface water pH, this presentation highlights how pH canalso shift due to natural processes such as excess photosynthesis or respiration, diurnal andseasonal cycles, extreme weather events, and more. The talk will draw on data collected from the Northwest Gulf of Mexico and the Southwest SouthAtlantic to examine how both abiotic and biotic factors—ranging from differing water massesand seasonal changes to biological interactions, diurnal patterns, and wind effects—contributeto variations in surface seawater pH.
