Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are an important solution for the
decarbonisation of the global energy system as it proceeds down the path to net zero
emissions. CO2 storage is a proven and effective way to permanently isolate captured CO2 from
the atmosphere. However, its successful deployment hinges on the:
· availability of CO2 storage
· to build confidence that injected CO2 is permanently and safely retained in the sub-surface
· CO2 storage can be deployed at the required scale.
Both the subsurface technical knowledge and related data sets of the petroleum industry are
major inputs required to address key challenges in assessing geologic reservoirs, estimating
storage resources and capacity, injectivity, and containment for the permanent and safe
storage of CO2.".
