on 22 October 2025 at 16-17 CEST
The relationship between geosciences and public policyhas never been more critical. While only a small percentage of geoscientists directlyengage in policymaking, the impact of public decisions on the profession isprofound—shaping salaries, defining professional roles, and determining theconditions for social license to operate. This presentation explores how geosciencesenter the public eye, often under conditions of uncertainty, and how uncertainty itselfbecomes a driver for building social trust. Through case studies Italy, Colombia andthe United States we highlight the interplay between science, politics, and society.Looking toward our common future, the challenges of population growth, energydemand, and social equity emphasize the necessity of integrating geoscientificexpertise into policy frameworks. Finally, the talk underscores the essential role ofprofessional organizations in bridging science and policy, fostering trust, andpreparing future leaders. The central message is clear: thinking about the well-beingof those around us is the most meaningful way for geoscientists to contribute tosustainable development.
