EAGE Workshop on Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) in Basalts

14 - 15 January 2025, Gandhinagar, India

WELCOME

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a rapidly developing technology that aims to reduce the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere. While CCS has been studied extensively in various geological formations, research into its potential in basalts is relatively new. To explore this topic further, an EAGE Workshop on CCS in Basalts is scheduled to be held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Gandhinagar in January 2025.

The workshop will bring experts worldwide to share their knowledge and experience in CCS in basalts. In addition to lectures by experts, the workshop will include fieldwork and a core display to give participants a hands-on understanding of the geological properties of basalt formations.

The fieldwork will be organized in Deccan Traps, a large volcanic province in western India known for its extensive basalt formations near Pune City (a few hour drive from Mumbai). The Deccan Traps are considered an ideal location for studying CCS in basalts due to the unique geological characteristics of the area. During the fieldwork, participants will have the opportunity to examine basalt outcrops, which are a natural lab better understanding basalt formations, their sub-surface architecture and lateral and vertical flow heterogeneities that subsequently dictate the potential for CO2 storage.

In addition to the fieldwork the workshop will feature lectures by experts in the field of CCS in basalts. These lectures will cover a wide range of topics, including the geological properties of basalt formations, the potential for CO2 storage in these formations, and the challenges and opportunities associated with CCS in basalt. Speakers at the workshop will include experts from academia and industry, representing diverse perspectives and experiences. Participants can engage with these experts and learn from their research and insights. Technical, economic and environmental aspects will be covered by various stakeholders. This will be followed by a core display that will be used to conclude the workshop.

Overall, the international workshop on CCS in basalts is expected to be a valuable opportunity for researchers and industry professionals to share their knowledge and experience in this emerging field. The fieldwork and the core display will provide a hands-on understanding of the geological properties of basalt formations. At the same time, the lectures will offer a deeper dive into the technical and practical aspects of CCS in basalt. By bringing together experts worldwide, the workshop aims to accelerate the development of this promising technology and contribute to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
