EAGE Workshop on Exploration and Opportunities in the Paleogene Play

28-29 July 2026 | Jakarta, Indonesia

APGCE 2026 Curtain Raiser

The EAGE Workshop on Exploration and Opportunities in the Paleogene Play sets the stage for the Asia Petroleum Geoscience Conference and Exhibition (APGCE) 2026, offering a platform where top selected abstracts will also be featured at the main conference. It will provide a platform for operators, regulators, service providers, and academia to explore how the Paleogene can deliver new growth opportunities across the energy landscape.

Unlocking Frontier Potential in Asia Pacific’s Upstream Oil & Gas Sector

The Paleogene succession — spanning the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene epochs — is emerging as one of Asia Pacific’s most promising but underexplored petroleum systems. With increased access to deepwater basins, improved geophysical imaging, and evolving geological models, interest is rapidly growing in tapping Paleogene plays across several basins in the region.

This workshop seeks to catalyse renewed exploration interest by spotlighting regional case studies, advancing technical discussions, and promoting strategic collaboration.

Paleogene Plays in the Asia Pacific Context

The Paleogene interval holds significant hydrocarbon potential across numerous basins in Asia Pacific. Historically overshadowed by younger Miocene and Pliocene plays, recent discoveries and reevaluation of older wells have highlighted the Paleogene as a viable exploration target.

Key Paleogene basins in the region include:

  • Deepwater Sabah & Sarawak (Malaysia) and Andaman Sea (Indonesia)
  • Syn-rift in North Sumatra and East Java Basins (Indonesia) and Malay Basin (Malaysia)
  • Eastern Indonesia Basins and NW Shelf Australia
  • Phu Khanh and Nam Con Son Basins (Vietnam)
  • South China Sea Margins (Brunei, Philippines)
