Recommendations for Oral Presenters

1. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

1.1. General Info

To ensure the success of the upcoming EAGE Workshop Programme, and to satisfy the high expectations of the delegates, it is important that presenters adhere to certain standards and guidelines. These are explained below, therefore we ask you to read this information carefully.

As a presenter, you are going to communicate the results of your work. In doing so, you have to consider carefully who your target audience is and what is of interest to them. It should be kept in mind that the majority of delegates are practicing professionals who like to leave the event with new ideas and developments that are applicable in their respective business activities.

Targeting your presentation to a narrow audience of specialists is justified only for very specialised sessions. Additionally, the amount and detail of information that can be communicated in the allocated presentation time is very limited. This means that complexities, detailed derivations and involved arguments will fail to reach your audience. Simple statements and illustrations are easier to understand and these must convey the essence of your presentation.

All presentations must be in English and should follow the ‘Professional and Ethical standards’ as stipulated in article XVI of EAGE’s By-laws

Programme times must be strictly adhered to.

1.2. Registration

All speakers must register for the workshop before 10 February 2021 using the online registration process.

1.3. Cancellations

The deadline to withdraw your presentation from the workshop programme is 1 February 2021 (23:59, CET). Should you be unable to give your presentation, then please inform us as soon as possible but ultimately 1 February 2021 via the Presenter Name Confirmation form

If you will not be the presenter of the presentation(s), please kindly provide us with the contact details of the replacing presenter in the Presenter Name Confirmation Form. (Please note that failure to do so will be considered as a no-show and will disqualify you from presenting at all EAGE events for the next 3 years.)

2. ORAL PRESENTATIONS

  • Please use the mandatory PowerPoint template to prepare your presentation
  • Please follow the instructions you have received for information about how to submit your pre-recorded presentation

3. TIPS & TRICKS

Basically, there are three key aspects to giving a great video presentation:

  • The technicalities
  • What you say
  • How you say it

3.1. The technicalities

  • Eliminate ambient noise: microphones are sound sensitive and can pick up even tiny noise, therefore it's good to check the surroundings, close windows,  mute your phone,  alerts on your computer, etc.
  • Lighting: it is advised to avoid bright (natural) light behind you, or avoid sitting underneath a very bright light that will make your head shine.
  • Background: white walls are possible of course, however don't be afraid of showing your natural environment like plants or paintings, as long as it's not too distracting.
  • Camera height: it is best to have an angle where your entire face is shown from the same level, instead of having the camera too low.
3.2. What you say

  • For some people, speaking comes naturally; for others it's very helpful to practice the presentation before recording it.

3.3. How you say it

  • Speak clearly and try not to speak too fast or too slow. It is not a problem if you make a mistake or forget a word, just rephrase what you wanted to say and continue with your presentation.
