EAGE Workshop on Exploration: Unlocking New Zealand’s Upstream Potential

1-2 September 2026 | Taranaki, New Zealand

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

New Zealand’s subsurface sector is at a strategic crossroads. With declining output from mature oil and gas fields such as Maui and Pohokura, yet promising geological basins and one of the world’s most significant geothermal endowments, the nation faces renewed opportunities to secure and diversify its energy future.

The recent lifting of the 2018 offshore exploration ban and growing emphasis on sustainable energy transition pathways have positioned New Zealand to reimagine exploration—not only for hydrocarbons but also for geothermal development and carbon storage (CCUS).

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

  1. Promote Exploration and Geothermal Opportunities: Showcase petroleum, CCUS, and geothermal potential across New Zealand’s onshore and offshore basins.

  2. Facilitate Technology Transfer: Introduce digital subsurface tools, advanced seismic and geothermal imaging, and AI/ML for reservoir characterisation and resource management.

  3. Encourage Collaboration: Connect regulators, NOCs, IOCs, geothermal developers, service providers, and universities to foster integrated resource development.

  4. Support Policy Dialogue: Provide a neutral platform to discuss fiscal incentives, licensing frameworks, and sustainability standards for exploration and geothermal growth.

  5. Advance Energy Transition Goals: Highlight the dual role of subsurface science — enabling both new discoveries and renewable energy through CCUS and geothermal innovation.
