MEET THE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Mikel Morvan 

Solvay 

Mikel Morvan is a Solvay Fellow Researcher and the Technical Director for the Enhanced Oil Recovery Alliance, an Alliance between Solvay, IFP Energies nouvelles and Beicip-Franlab. In his current assignment, he is responsible for setting and developing the Alliance Research & Development global program and delivering customer projects. He is also managing the Solvay EMEA Oil & Gas laboratory.

Prior to this appointment, he served as Director of Complex Fluids Laboratory (Bristol, New-Jersey, USA) a joined laboratory between Rhodia and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). He obtained his doctorate in chemistry from University of Paris VI in 1993 with specialization in physical chemistry. His domain of expertise deals with soft condensed matter with a focus on polymer and surfactant science. He is author and co-author of more than 80 patents and papers dealing with colloids.

Dr. S. A. (Raj) Mehta

University of Calgary 


Dr. S. A. (Raj) Mehta is a professor of oil and gas engineering and Director of International Programs in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary.  EOR and especially thermal and air injection-based oil recovery processes, including hybrid processes, have been his main career focus.  He has been with the In Situ Combustion Research Group at the University since 1986, serving as co-director since 1991.  He has co-authored more than 400 papers, reports, and patents on in situ combustion and safety, winning several awards for his work.  He consults internationally on Thermal IOR and drilling and completion safety, plus is a co-founder and director of Hot-Tec Energy Inc., a Calgary firm focusing on EOR/IOR processes, specialized equipment and oil field safety.  He holds BEng and MSc degrees in mechanical engineering and a PhD with specialization in oil sands combustion technology from the University of Calgary.  He was a member of Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.  He is an active member of SPE, CHOA and a registered professional engineer in the Province of Alberta, Canada.

 

Dr. Ganesh Thakur

University of Houston 

Dr. Ganesh Thakur is a Distinguished Professor of Petroleum Engineering and Director – of Energy Industry Partnerships at the University of Houston since 2016, leading research on integrated petroleum reservoir management, EOR, unconventional resources, and CCS.  His expertise covers both theoretical and practical aspects and he has worked in the industry for 40 years (Chevron), designing major capital projects involving billions of dollars of investments. He has published over 100 technical and management articles and authored three books.  He is a former President of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and he currently serves as a Board Member and Treasurer of the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology.  He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors and currently serves as Chevron Fellow Emeritus and Chief Technology Advisor for GeoPark. 


Dr. Dawoud Mahrouqi

Petroleum Development Oman


Dr. Dawoud Mahrouqi. Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Nottingham University, MSc in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University, Australia and PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London in the controlled salinity waterflood for IOR/EOR implementation. 15 years’ experience in oil and gas business and Reservoir Engineering by background and discipline. Specialty in chemical EOR recoveries; primarily in polymer and Alkaline Surfactant Polymer (ASP) Projects. Appointed as Associate SME in chemical EOR from Shell cEOR community in 2019. Current work focuses on the CCUS stream and specifically on the CO2 utilization aspects for enhanced oil/gas recoveries. Leading EOR technologies and deployment section in Petroleum Development Oman. Very active in SPE conferences and research aspects in EOR domain.

 


Omer Gurpinar

Schlumberger


Omer Gurpinar is Schlumberger’s Director for Enhanced Oil Recovery.  He is well recognized globally with his vision on IOR/EOR.   He has been responsible for leading Schlumberger on development of technologies and services aiming to improve recovery factors in oilfields, including Unconventional reservoirs.   Primarily Omer is a dedicated “hands-on” Reservoir Engineer and has over 40 years of experience in various oil and gas projects.   His scientific interest includes but not limited to mature-field-optimization, naturally fractured reservoirs, recovery physics, compositional reservoir modelling, CO2EOR and more importantly “smart field optimization systems from pore to pipeline”.

Over the years, he has contributed to enhancing performance of significant number of reputable oil and gas fields globally.   Since joining to Schlumberger in 1996, he served as Vice President and/or as Technical Director in various Segments and played a key role on building Schlumberger’s E&P consulting organization.  Before Schlumberger, Omer served as the Vice President - Reservoir Simulation with INTERA, and prior to that Chief Reservoir Engineer for Scientific Software-Intercomp (SSI). Omer have started his professional career with TPAO in 1976.

He holds number of industry recognized patents pertinent to field optimization, EOR, smart-digital field management systems and digital rocks.   Omer has served as the EOR Editor of JPT between 2014 and 2019.

 


Jaime Jimenez

Ecopetrol


Jaime Jimenez is the Technology Manager for Reservoir Engineering & EOR for Ecopetrol. He has more than 15 years of experience in the oil and gas sector, working mostly as a reservoir engineer in heavy oil and EOR projects in Colombia, Canada, Oman, Malaysia, Uganda, Venezuela and The Netherlands. He has been working with Ecopetrol for 8 years, and previously he worked for Shell and Total. He is a Civil Engineer from the National University of Colombia, and has a PhD from the University of Alberta in geomechanics.

 


Daniel Alberton Haas 

Petrobras


Mr. Haas is a mechanical engineer from the Federal University of Santa Catarina - UFSC and has a Master’s degree in heat transfer and fluid mechanics from the same institution. He has 13 years of experience in Petrobras Research Center and is an expert in EOR, having worked with polymer and foam injection projects, low salinity water, nanotechnology materials and reservoir souring.

His current activities involve fractured reservoir modelling for deep and near conformance, low salinity water injection and foam injection. He is also involved with field implementation of EOR methods.
