Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) is Korea’s only government-funded national research institute dedicated to geoscience and mineral resources R&D. Tracing its origins to the Geological Survey in 1918 and established as a national research institute in 1948, KIGAM is headquartered in Daejeon. Its vision is “Leading innovative solution of geo-technology to sustainable Earth,” and its mission includes geoscientific survey and data infrastructure, resource technology for national security, climate and carbon-neutral innovations, and enhanced earthquake detection and disaster prevention. KIGAM works across subsurface and near-surface domains, including geophysical exploration and imaging, mineral resources, groundwater and environmental characterization, and geohazards monitoring. In support of the energy transition, KIGAM develops CO₂ storage and monitoring (CCUS) and geothermal technologies, combining field acquisition, laboratory measurements, numerical simulation, and data-driven methods. KIGAM is actively applying AI/ML to improve interpretation, uncertainty quantification, monitoring, and decision-making through partnerships with academia, industry, and global organizations worldwide.
