Field trip 4Friday, 7 June
10:00 (up to 3hrs)

This event is only for Students (age limit is 35 years)

Description

Urban Geology is the geology of the built environment. This includes the building stones and other materials used in town and cities as well as the tantalising glimpses of the pre-urban landscape and underlying bedrock. This trip will begin with a guided walking tour will visit several localities to observe a range of very different rocks that can be observed across the city.

After that we visit the Geological Society of London to view ‘the map that changed the world’, William Smith’s 1815 geological map of England, Wales and Scotland. Examination of the map will show that the outcropping geology of central London consists of sediments of Eocene and younger age. From here you will be given a tour of the historical library at the Geological Society.

Finally, there will be a light lunch presented at the Burlington house of the Geological Society, an excellent opportunity for networking with experts and peers from both societies in the heart of London!

The tour will leave from the front desk of the Geological Society of London. All delegates are expected to travel to the address below at Piccadilly at their own expense.
