Meet the Participants: BIODENTIFY 

In the build up to the EAGE Annual 2019 , we are proud to introduce you to a selection of the participants who will be joining us for the 81st EAGE Conference and Exhibition (3-6 June) in London. 

Meet BIODENTIFY, a member of the Start-Up Area at the EAGE Annual Exhibition. What better way for us to introduce you to this exciting special interest area!

Where and when were you founded?

Biodentify was founded as a spin out from Dutch R&D group TNO in December 2014. Biodentify is headquartered in the University City of Delft, the Netherlands, and has a business development and support office in Houston, USA.

What is the mission of BIODENTIFY? 

Our mission is to disrupt the oil and gas industry through more accurate predictions of hydrocarbon reservoirs. We have developed a methodology to identify where hydrocarbons exist without drilling wells or acquiring seismic. The process involves taking shallow soil (or seabed) samples, and using high-end computing and machine learning to analyze hundreds of thousands of DNA biomarkers that thrive in soil and are impacted by micro-seep from subsurface hydrocarbon accumulations. 

With this patented technique and sophisticated lab analysis millions of computations are done in concert with a database of known specimens, to predict where potential reservoirs lie. This process can rank the best reservoir locations, thus reduce drilling risks and as a result saves time, money, and the environment from excessive activity. Current studies, onshore and offshore, are relatively inexpensive compared to drilling wells or acquiring seismic and has yielded over 70% accuracy rating in predictions.

Who from your team will join us for the EAGE Annual?

Jonathan Zwaan, COO and Commercial Director of Biodentify. Jonathan holds an MSc in Geology and  has over 20 years’ experience in the industry, developing and bringing to market innovative software and technologies. 

Mart Zijp (Head of Operations) has been working as a Petroleum Geologist for over eight years. He initially worked at Dutch research organization TNO prior to joining Biodentify. Over the past years he has been active in both unconventional and conventional oil and gas projects studying the subsurface in Europe, US and Australia.

What will BIODENTIFY be doing at the EAGE Annual 2019?

We will show and explain people what we do, how we do it and in what way we have a revolutionary technique in our hands.

When did your first get involved with EAGE?

We are really pleased that we can take part in this year’s EAGE Annual in London, a first for Biodentify. We are a start-up, but our management team is very experienced and has been active in the oil and gas industry for many years.

What do you hope for most from your participation in the Start-Up Area?

Make the industry aware of what Biodentify provides as a service and get the word out that we can help reduce exploration risk by ranking prospects / well targets. Furthermore, of course catch up with old friends, meet new people, and see what is going on in the oil and gas tech world at the moment.

What is the importance of events like the EAGE Annual for BIODENTIFY?

EAGE Annual is a great chance for us to present our innovative technology to a wider audience. Participation gives us the possibility to hopefully have many interesting and productive conversations. 

Thanks to initiatives like EAGE Annual, Biodentify gets the opportunity to reach thousands of geoscientists, engineers and present high-end hydrocarbon reservoirs detection technology with approx. 70% accuracy prior to drilling any wells.

Where can guests find you on the Exhibition Floor?

Guests can find us in the Start-Up Area, number 561 in the official floorplan. It will be hard to miss us. We’ll have a clear and informative banner next to our table, and our team members, Jonathan and Mart, will be full of energy, and ready for productive conversations. We can’t wait to participate in EAGE 2019!
