Exploration and Capital Discipline: Can We Collaborate Our Way into Faster, Better, More? – The Triquel

Workshop 12: Monday, 3 June
Conveners: Herlinde  Mannaerts-Drew (BP)
Chrysanthe Munn (BP)
Christian Longis (Total)
With support from Jan Helgesen (Equinor)

Description:

The objective of this workshop series is to identify collaborative practices and ways to continue to boost exploration activity globally.

Since 2014, most oil companies did cut into their discretionary exploration budget and despite the oil price strengthening, it is expected that capital spend will continue to be disciplined for the foreseeable future.

A first workshop of this kind was held during the EAGE Conference in Paris in 2017, followed by a workshop at the Copenhagen EAGE Conference in 2018. In 2019, the London workshop will summarise the results achieved to date and explore how the ‘digital revolution’ may support faster exploration decision making from seismic to drilling.

Main Disciplines: Exploration, Geophysics, Geoscience, Drilling

Who should attend:

Explorationists, Geophysicists & Geoscientists, Drilling Engineers and Industry leadership and Commercial Representatives, with an interest in the evolution of the seismic market, trends in geoscience, exploration drilling operations preparation and execution and how industry can collaborate to reduce cycle time and cost from access/exploration to drilling/development.

Workshop Programme:

Session 1: Progress on Initiatives and Seismic Market Overview

09:00Welcome and Review of where we are today with W12
H.M.-Drew (BP) and C. Munn (BP)
09:30Review of Seismic Market with a Foray into Drilling
C. Hunter (HIS Markit)
10:20Coffee break

Session 2: Industry Perspective: Collaborating to Accelerate Exploration and Drilling Decision Making – How to progress technology and R&D

The perspective for the keynote presentations is to inform industry on direction and also pose the question around how technology development is seen in the current market environment where the cost of ‘hardware’ R&D is difficult to justify by individual (seismic) companies and the trends remain asset light and digitally focused, while we have a need for ever denser, higher quality data interpreted faster to support exploration and drilling decisions.

What collaboration between oil companies and the seismic industry should we envisage, what are the trends and how will this affect exploration and field development with a view to reduce cycle time and cost from access/exploration to drilling/development?

10:30Seismic Collaboration and Technology:
Moving Exploration forward in Today's World - P. Whithing (SVP, Geoscience - CGG)
Technology Needs - Can Collaboration Help? - J. Helgesen (VP Seismic Exploration - Equinor)
Enabling Collaboration through Evolving Operational and Commercial Models - T. Scoulios ( Chief Operations Officer Western Hemisphere, Magseis Fairfield)
Multi-Client Seismic and the Essence of Commercial Collaboration - F. Amundsen (SVP Europe and Asia Pacific, TGS)
12:00Lunch break

Session 3: Drilling Preparation and Operations Collaboration Panel

We believe there exists some room of improvement in the conduct of the Industry exploration drilling operations to lower their societal and environmental footprint whilst improving their efficiency in order to gain more acceptance in the countries we operate.

Operators and Service Companies involved in the preparation and execution of drilling operations should endeavor to identify and implement more efficient measures to reduce complexity and duplicity of such operations, and to collaborate to develop innovative technologies and approaches within strict respect of competition laws.

Approach:

The objective of the panel is to share perspectives on potential areas of the drilling preparation and execution that could benefit from cross-industry collaboration.

Such areas may include, but are not be limited to mutualization of HSE means and data, standardization, relief well & capping solutions, logistic facilities, alignment in new technology development, and acceleration opportunities involving information sharing (drilling scout) and role of Artificial Intelligence.

Panel Format:

13:30Panel Introduction: Outcomes on the Operations Sessions of the 2nd EAGE Collaboration Workshop on Deepwater Exploration in Mexico, by K. Bordosky (Director Contracts and Marketing, Diamond Offshore)
14:00Panel member presentations on sharing of ideas/initiatives to improve exploration operations collaboration across the industry

Panel members:
  • C. Longis (Global Exploration Performance Coordinator, TOTAL)
  • S. Borthen Toven (Vice President EXP EE WPE, Well Planning and Evaluation, Equinor ASA)
  • R. Holmes (Senior Commercial Consultant Wells, ExxonMobil Upstream Integrated Solutions Company)
  • A. Sherritt (Global Well Planning Director, BP)
14:45Panel Discussion and Q&A with audience
