EOR and its Future in Latin America

The objective is to create an open dialogue on the future of EOR in Latin America, current projects, key challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities for broader implementation of enhanced recovery technologies across the region.
One of the key objectives of this panel is to broaden the discussion within the EOR community. While previous editions of the workshop have featured valuable contributions from countries such as Argentina, Colombia, and North America, we have had fewer opportunities to hear directly about the EOR developments taking place in Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico, and Venezuela.
This panel will provide a unique opportunity to share experiences, discuss progress achieved over the past several years, and increase the visibility of the important work being carried out across the region, while strengthening the exchange of knowledge among operators and the broader EOR community. Most of the invited panelists are senior Reservoir Engineers within their respective organizations. Each of them brings more than 20 years of experience in EOR development and implementation, spanning a wide range of applications including polymer flooding, steam injection, thermal recovery, and other enhanced recovery technologies.
Their combined experience will provide a unique opportunity to discuss not only technical challenges, but also the strategic and organizational aspects of successfully deploying EOR projects across different operating environments.
Edgar Vásquez
Petroleum Engineer with over 25 years of experience specializing in project management within the hydrocarbon industry. Expert in the comprehensive development of exploitation schemes for both new and mature light and heavy oil fields, covering the entire lifecycle from planning, drilling, and development to production and processing. Distinguished for leading integrated studies on reservoir characterization and productivity optimization. Specialist in implementing well stimulation technologies and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) methods, with extensive experience in chemical (polymer injection) and thermal (steam and hot gas injection) processes aimed at maximizing recovery factors and asset profitability.
David Kahn
Dr. David S. Kahn is an executive leader and heavy oil specialist with a distinguished track record of scaling unconventional and heavy oil assets across North America, South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia. His career spans foundational technical and operational roles at major energy institutions including Texaco, Enron, Halliburton, and Baker Technologies, progressing through executive leadership positions and key advisory roles with Valkor Energy, Ivanhoe Energy, and Lundin companies.Combining deep subsurface expertise with capital markets acumen, Dr. Kahn has driven public and private company growth to annual revenues exceeding $500 million, supported successful liquidity events including Ensyn Energy’s NASDAQ listing, and expertly navigated complex, post-pandemic financing dynamics. He specializes in deploying modern enhanced oil recovery (EOR) strategies—such as advanced polymer applications—to unlock maximum value from complex heavy oil reservoirs while building and leading high-performing technical teams.Currently, Dr. Kahn leads Greenflame Resources, an international EOR company focused on the rapid implementation of advanced enhanced oil recovery solutions globally.

Gaston Fondevilla
Petroleum Engineering from ITBA and an Executive MBA from IAE. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at ITBA in the subjects of Petrophysics and Reservoir Fluids. He currently serves as Engineering Manager for the CAPSA-CAPEX group. He is the author and co-author of 8 papers on secondary and tertiary recovery and the thermodynamics of fluids. Member of the SPE and SPEE, and one of the founders of the Latin American chapter. He has served on the committee and as a judge for various SPE and IAPG conferences and workshops.
