Thursday 29 September 2022
Time: 8:00 - 18:00
Locations: Eisenstadt, St. Margarethen, Rust/Lake Neusiedl
Participants of this year's Fault and Top Seal's conference can join us for an exciting field trip to the Leitha Mountains, 50 km SE of Vienna.
The cost of the field trip including transportation, lunch and snacks is already included in the conference registration fee.
The Leitha Mountains form the prominent south-western boundary of the Vienna Basin. They comprise a Miocene limestone platform emerging in a Mid-Badenian subtropical environment. During the further evolution of the platform, tectonic events controlled the distribution of the limestones and siliciclastics of different geologic age. Vertical tectonic movements further segmented the Leitha Mountains creating the structural geologic highlights in the landscape we see today.
The field trip offers insights into detailed fault zone observations in various lithologies. The visit of one of Europe's oldest limestone quarries in St. Margarethen complements the program not only in a structural geologic sense: the quarry also serves as a backdrop for international cultural events. The day concludes at the Lake Neusiedl, a place firmly embedded in the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape.
