Field Trip: Following the traces of bradyseism in the Phlegraean Fields volcanic area

   Wednesday, 16 October 2024

  14:00 - 17:00

   Meeting point: conference  venue

Field Trip Leader: Luigi Bianco, University of Naples "Federico II"

Join us on a fascinating journey through the inner part of the active Campi Flegrei caldera, a volcanic field characterised by a 12 km sized almost circular structure enclosing several volcanic edifices, including tuff cones, diatremes, minor calderas and lava domes.
The landscape is characterised by a depression, with the southern part of the caldera submerged beneath the Pozzuoli Gulf and the Rione Terra neighbourhood overlooking the coast.Due to its high urbanisation, this volcano is considered one of the most hazardous in the world.
Our tour will entice a close view of the Pozzuoli's Solfatara, which is currently closed to the public for safety reasons. From there, we will walk to the historic centre of Pozzuoli, where we will observe the effects of the volcanic activity, including hydrothermal anomalies, increased seismicity, and noticeable ground uplift. In the city centre, we will explore Roman ruins that witnessed volcanic activities over the past 2000 years.
This is a unique opportunity to explore an active volcano and experience firsthand the maximum ground deformation caused by bradyseism.

The field trip is included in your registration fee, but spots are limited. Contact us here to check current availability.
