1st Conference on Geophysics for Geothermal-Energy Utilization and Renewable-Energy Storage

With the demands of a growing global population, the utilization of the geological subsurface is rapidly increasing. Geothermal energy and/or renewable or conventional fluid storage are key to achieve the crucial goal of a green-gases zero-emission society. Implementing concepts for the utilization of the subsurface is often hampered by high up-front investment costs for exploration, drilling and completion. Other hampering factors are: testing potential target reservoirs for renewable resources; low return-on-investment from successful projects; the potential of induced seismicity; uncertainties (reservoir quality, physical properties etc.), and low sustainability compared to the hydrocarbon industry. Exploration of new target reservoirs for subsurface storage (heat, chill, fluids including CO2 and H2, pressurized air) and geothermal systems, as well as the monitoring of operational sites require dedicated state-of-the-art geophysical survey and monitoring networks. 

This conference will be focused specifically on the geophysical developments (e.g. gravity, magnetic, magnetotelluric, time-domain electromagnetic, seismic methods) dedicated to this goal. We welcome contributions on case studies showing application and challenges of geophysics for characterization and monitoring of target reservoir horizons, as well as research results from field to laboratory scale, indicating trends, important solutions, and future possibilities both for shallow and deep applications. 

We aim at bringing together professionals from academia, research centers, service companies, operators, and energy companies, dedicated to geophysical solutions for a ‘global’ efficient utilization of the subsurface. In order to cross-fertilize with established industries and to speed-up the transition towards a zero-emission society, we would like to especially encourage experts from the hydrocarbon industry to participate and explore future business opportunities.
