VISIT TO THE KAUST SUPERCOMPUTING AND VISUALIZATION LABORATORIES

The KAUST Supercomputing Core Laboratory

KAUST’s Shaheen III: the Middle East’s most powerful supercomputer

KAUST Supercomputing core Laboratory (KSL)'s mission is to inspire and enable scientific, economic and social advances through the development and application of HPC solutions, through collaboration with KAUST researchers and partners, and through the provision of world-class computational systems and services.

  • Offering world-class HPC and data resources in a fashion that stimulates research and development.

  • Assisting KAUST researchers and partners to exploit the HPC resources at KAUST with a combination of training, consultation and collaboration.

  • Collaborating with KAUST researchers in the joint development of HPC solutions that advance the scientific knowledge in the disciplines strategic to KAUST mission.

  • Growing HPC capability at KSL over time to meet the future needs of the KAUST and the Kingdom computing community.

The KAUST supercomputing Core Lab hosts and operates the middle east’s fastest supercomputer, Shaheen III to support the construction and testing of predictive mathematical models using traditional simulations based on differential equations, emulation based on statistics and machine learning based on neural networks. These mathematical models can be employed in the service of many things, including scientific discovery, engineering design and policy support.

Shaheen III is also ranked 20th in the world top500 list ranking. Such supercomputing capacity has become increasingly vital to global innovation, industry competitiveness and economic growth. From accelerating vaccine discovery to fight a pandemic, to advancing clean energy systems to increase sustainability, to enabling new possibilities in AI, supercomputing is a core technology to solving the world's most challenging scientific and engineering problems.

The KAUST Visualization Core Laboratory

The Visualization Core Lab is one of the 12 core labs at Kaust. It advances the KAUST mission by providing cutting-edge visualization and data science services. We collaborate with domain researchers to accelerate discoveries through large-data visualization, data analytics, virtual and augmented reality (AR/VR), and data science. KVL helps scientists explore their data. We engage with almost every department and center on campus to the point where they have the raw data from their experiments or simulations, and they need to make sense of them. We also support the needs of KAUST and In-Kingdom entities by providing access to and training on state-of-the-art visualization hardware and software for scientific discovery.

In the KVL tour, we overview our services, collaborations, and facilities. We have state-of-the-art 2D display walls as well as 3D semi-immersive facilities. We display demos and success stories on these facilities. Lastly, we have various AR/VR gadgets, and we give interactive demos on them to the interested audience.
