King Harald V’s Funeral in Oslo

The state funeral of King Harald V will take place in Oslo on Wednesday, 9 September 2026. The funeral service will be held at Oslo Cathedral at 13:00, with a ceremonial procession from the Royal Palace to the cathedral. Large parts of central Oslo will be subject to closures and security measures during the day.

One Minute of Silence

A nationwide minute of silence will take place from 13:00 to 13:01.

The silence will begin with three church bell tolls and will end with three further tolls.

The workshop programme has been arranged with this in mind. The minute of silence coincides with the beginning of the lunch break, so there will be no disruption to the workshop programme.

Allow Extra Time for Travel

Please expect larger crowds, increased security and longer journey times, particularly in central Oslo and during the afternoon.

If you are travelling after the workshop, we strongly recommend allowing additional time for your journey, especially if you are travelling to Oslo Airport.

Public Transport in Central Oslo

Public transport will continue to operate, but services in central Oslo will be affected.

Metro (T-Bane) – recommended

  • The metro will generally operate as normal.

  • Stortinget station will be closed.

  • At Nationaltheatret, only eastbound lines will operate and access will be restricted.

  • Use other central stations where possible.

Trams and buses

  • Several tram routes will not serve central Oslo.

  • Bus routes will be adjusted to accommodate the traffic-free areas.

  • Expect changes and delays, particularly around the city centre.

For the latest information and journey planning, please check the Ruter app before travelling.

Travelling to Oslo Airport

If you are travelling to Oslo Airport (Gardermoen) after the workshop, train is the recommended option.

Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) is expected to be busy, particularly as people leave the city following the funeral. Please allow extra time to reach the station and for navigating through the crowds.

Road traffic is expected to be significantly affected by closures and security measures, so taxis and airport buses may take considerably longer than usual.
