Welcome to

The First EAGE Online Workshop on Mineral Exploration in Latin America

Workshop Overview

Mineral exploration expenditure is expected to increase significantly in the next decade. Some have claimed for a “supercycle”, as demands for raw materials will increase, in an attempt to reach the Paris Climate-Change Agreement and a smooth transition towards a neutral-carbon society.

To cope with this demand and an improved commodity market, the mineral-exploration community will have to be prepared not only to innovate new solutions but also to make sure exploration is done cost-effectively, environmentally-friendly and  sustainably, moreover, addressing issues related to social acceptance and community involvements. The mineral-exploration community also needs to address the ever-increasing challenge of exploring at depth using sensitive, accurate, and multidisciplinary solutions. Skilled personnel will likely be in shortage, and new generations of young professionals are, and correctly, more concerned about the environment.

These all require attention, as there will likely be a gap due to this fast transformation from hydrocarbons towards minerals.

Topics

In this workshop, co-organized by the Near-Surface Geoscience Division of EAGE, we will cover the following topics:

1. Mineral exploration techniques through the whole value chain

  • 1.1 New geological, geochemical, and geophysical solutions / New and state-of-the-art prototypes
  • 1.2 Case studies: targeting tier-1 and 2 deposits
  • 1.3 Improving the gap between exploration, mining, mineral processing, geometallurgy and geotechnical characterization
  • 1.4 Addressing geotechnical and geomechanical issues at the exploration stage
  • 1.5 Virtual reality and machine-learning solutions
  • 1.6 Skilled personnel, inter-discipline communication, and corporate/academic collaboration

2. Society, government, and communities

  • 2.1 Community engagement, environment, and social license to explore
  • 2.2 Role of the geological surveys and agencies to create knowledge and attract exploration investment
