Neil Piggott

Vice President, Exploration – Commercial and Strategy

Hess Corporation 

Neil has helped Hess build a world-class portfolio, leading Exploration Excellence, pre-developments and new-venture exploration of the Atlantic Margin, with a focus on Guyana, Suriname, Gulf of Mexico and Canada. Industry macro analysis is used to assess competitor exploration strategy and progress discoveries through to projects via Pre-Development concept selection.  

Prior to joining Hess in March 2015, Neil was with BP for over 30 years. Most recently, he served as Vice President, Exploration, leading BP’s exploration operations in South America, where he led a program focused on the Brasilian deepwater Equatorial Margin, East Coast and offshore Uruguay. From 2004-10, he was Vice President, Global Exploration and Renewal, leading new ventures for BP. Earlier in his career Neil held a number of Exploration Manager positions in the FSU in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, East Siberia and Sakhalin. 


Ronan Ávila

Deputy Superintendent

Ronan Ávila is Deputy Geological and Economic Assessment Superintendent at the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP), where he joined in 2013. In addition, he worked onshore and offshore for several private companies in Brazil and other countries, such as Halliburton, Fugro, Paradigm Geophysical, and Geo research. Furthermore, he acted for the Brazilian Geological Survey, the Brazilian Energy Research Company, and Brazil's Nuclear Industries in the public sector. Ronan is a Geologist from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro; with an MBA in Project Management from the University of São Paulo and a Master's degree in engineering and science from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he began this year his doctorate in energy planning focused on the Geological Storage of CO2 .


Raphael Moura

Superintendent for Technology and Environment

Raphael Moura is a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Liverpool, specializing in incident and human factors learning, and Master in Risk Management from Cranfield University, both in the UK. He has an MBA in Enterprise Management from Fundação Getúlio Vargas and a degree in Production Engineering with emphasis in Mechatronics from CEFET-RJ and a postgraduate degree in Offshore Systems from UFRJ. 

Moura is a Regulatory Specialist who has been admitted to the ANP since November 2005. Current Superintendent of Operational Safety and Environment, he has held several strategic and leadership roles at the Agency, having been Head of the Coordination of Operational Safety, Superintendent of Infrastructure and Handling, Advisor to the Board of Directors and Exploration Superintendent. He was the Agency's Acting Director General from September to December 2020, and Interim Director from June to December 2021. 

In the academic field, he is an honorary researcher at the University of Liverpool-UK and editor of the journal of the American Association of Mechanical Engineers (ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems Part B: Mechanical Engineering).


Francois Baillard

Francois Baillard is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Iraya Energies, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Iraya Energies is a scale-up company specialized in Machine Learning applied to Geoscience and Engineering, focused in the field of managing unstructured data within the Oil and Gas industry. Francois comes with a wide experience in geoscience working in technical, sales and management roles for Iraya, CGG and Total Energies. 

In Iraya, he is responsible of the R&D, implementing new Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence technologies covering supervised and unsupervised learning for Deep Technologies to extract valuable knowledge from unstructured data. Prior to this, he spent 11 years in CGG respectively based in Norway and Malaysia where he worked on integrated solutions to close the gap between different G&G disciplines: geophysics (acquisition, processing, QI, interpretation), geology (structural geology, sedimentology, biostratigraphy) and petrophysics (rock-physics). 

He is also the author of 25+ technical publications for EAGE, APGCE, IPA and the Geological Society of London in the field of Machine Learning, Geophysics, Seismic Reservoir Characterization and Geology. Francois holds a MSc degree in Physics from Telecom Physics, Strasbourg, and a MSc degree in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from HEC business school, Paris, France. He also has 2 certifications in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence: Machine Learning (Stanford Univ., United States) and Deeplearning.ai by Andrew Ng. Francois is a creator and committed to decarbonization of the economy. 



Pedro Victor Zalán

ZAG Consulting in Petroleum Exploration

Pedro Victor Zalán received a Bachelor degree in Geology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. titles in Geology from the Colorado School of Mines, Golden. He worked for Petrobras for 34 years where he held the positions of well site geologist, interpretation geologist, explorationist, coordinator of technical teams and exploration manager for several basins in Brazil and worldwide, notably for the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, West Africa and South America. He was appointed top senior consultant in his last 8 years with the company. 

Zalán has produced several tens of publications and has given presentations in numerous international conferences. He was awarded the Orville Derby Golden Medal in 2005 by the Sociedade Brasileira de Geologia, the Gabriel Dengo Memorial Award from the AAPG (2010) and the Giuseppe Bacoccoli and Rodi Ávila Medeiros Medals (2012 and 2017) by the ABGP (Brazilian Association of Petroleum Geologists). Upon retirement, Zalán founded ZAG Consulting in Petroleum Exploration, based in Rio de Janeiro. Since 2012 he has been a consultant for exploration matters for more than 30 companies in Brazil and abroad; as well as for Brazilian government entities such as ANP, EPE and the Navy.

Lúcio Prevatti

Lúcio Prevatti is currently the General Manager for Exploration in Brazil. He is a geologist by background and brings a wealth of experience after 23 years in various roles in Exploration, Development and Unconventionals, in Brazil and USA. He is enthusiastic about geology and people development and believes Brazil has the geology and capabilities required to deliver new oil, supporting Brazil energy mix. He is married with 2 kids and as a good Carioca, enjoys football, samba and feijoada.
