First EAGE Workshop on Hydrogen & Carbon Capture Sequestration in Latin America

5 - 6 October, 2023

Workshop Structure

The First EAGE Workshop on Hydrogen & Carbon Capture Sequestration in Latin America will be a venue for presenting and discussing experience and knowledge to and with the attendees to develop an understanding of what has been done, what will be needed, what choices have to be made, the risks, the uncertainties, and the costs of bad decisions. This working session will be held on the afternoon of 6 October under the guidance of Jazmin Mota from the University of Edinburgh and collaborator at the National Laboratory of Sustainability Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

This workshop is structured in two sections:

Section 1 – Introduction to systems thinking and its relevance in decision-making.

We all live in a complex world where multiple elements are continuously interacting and influencing other. All the decisions we make, the strategies and programmes that we develop also respond to this complexity and, therefore, require space and methods to be analysed. This section is designed to elaborate on how technical, sociopolitical, economic, and environmental things are interconnected, and how these connections determine the project´s performance and possible outcomes.

Section 2 – Use of Mental Modeler® to model a CCS and Hydrogen system.

Fortunately, there are various methods and tools that help us to analyse our projects and strategies and support the decision-making process. In this section, we will learn how to use Mental Modeler® to describe and analyse a CCS and Hydrogen system.

All the activities are designed to encourage collaboration and an open discussion about what the future looks like for CCS and Hydrogen in Latin America. This session, held by the end of the workshop, will be especially productive and helpful to ground our ideas and integrate the knowledge and information gathered during the event.

The workshop will facilitate building personal networks to create efficient learning curves and develop critical and systems thinking.

Jazmín Mota is a geological engineer who graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico(UNAM) and PhD candidate from the University of Edinburgh. She is currently a consultant at the National Laboratory of Sustainability Sciences of UNAM and a researcher at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. Her academic interests focus on the energy and environment sectors, extractive industries, and sustainability.

In the professional field, she was director of Clean Technologies at the Ministry of Energy of Mexico. She worked as a consultant for the World Bank and as a project engineer at the Federal Electricity Commission. She has worked and collaborated on projects on Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) and, more recently, on sustainability projects and their links with the extractive industry. SShe has represented Mexico in working groups and multilateral forums on CCS/CCUS.

She has carried out activities such as public consultations, teaching, training, and scientific dissemination.
