The pre-salt carbonates in the South Atlantic is a prolific hydrocarbon play which continues to surpass expectations with quarterly production records being broken and monthly production exceeding 4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. Crucial exploration and appraisal activities continue across the play with ongoing multi-billion barrel field developments and new projects being sanctioned. This is an exciting time for the pre-salt.
On both sides of the South Atlantic, exploration and production activities have demonstrated that the pre-salt play is not without its challenges. Comprehensive reservoir characterization linked to production behavior is a key success factor in the pre-salt. Large volumes of multidisciplinary data are available to support E&P decisions, from regional down to well level, which need to be integrated, visualized, and interpreted. Digital solutions and technology innovations are increasingly important in these respects; they improve efficiencies across the hydrocarbon value chain as the world focusses on low carbon solutions and the energy transition.
