Meet Our Keynote Speakers!

Thank you to our Keynote Sponsor, UMD Petroleum Sdn Bhd!

Peter Lunt, Stratos Energy Advisors

“Surely this has been done before?"

Peter Lunt is a geologist with extensive experience as a stratigrapher in South East Asia. He is currently a Partner at Stratos Energy Advisors, with 35 years in South East Asia and experience that covers fieldwork, rig-site work, laboratory analyses, seismic and geohistory studies. Peter is currently writing up new views and methods in geology as it impacts both hydrocarbon plays and regional knowledge, with academic, geological surveys and industry colleges.

Sebastien Lacaze, Eliis

“Comprehensive Approach to Reveal Geology from Seismic Data"

Sebastien Lacaze is the Chief Executive officer and the co-founder of Eliis, a software company specialized in seismic interpretation, which develops the software PaleoScan™. He is the co-inventor of the method for 3D geological modeling from seismic data. His past experience has included employment as a seismologist at the French Atomic Energy Commission from 1998 to 2003, a research geophysicist in quantitative interpretation in the Techlog® software at Techsia (now Schlumberger) from 2003 to 2007 for the oil and gas industry. He holds a MSc in fundamental marine geophysics (Brest University, France) and a MSc in Applied Geophysics (Paris University, France)

Douglas Waples, Sirius Exploration Geochemistry

“Integrated Geohistory Analysis (IGA): enhancing the power and relevance of stratigraphy and sedimentology in answering exploration questions"

Douglas Waples has worked in many countries as a consultant in basin modeling for more than 35 years. He has developed several types of modeling software, and has created over the past two decades Integrated Geohistory Analysis (IGA), which combines Basin Modeling with geological thinking to provide new exploration insights and answers. He is a strong believer in the “fresh-eyes” approach to problem solving, and is committed to making his technologies available to a wide range of geoscientists. He has taught in many countries, especially in SE Asia, and has published numerous papers, book chapters, books, and educational videos.

John Jong, JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Co

“A Play-Based Evaluation of a Deepwater Sabah Exploration Area: Prospect Maturation and Implications for Remaining Prospectivity"

Dr John Jong has over 25 years of international research and working experience in the oil and gas industry. He started his career with Shell in the mid-1990's as an Exploration Geologist. In 2007, John joined Tap Oil in Perth working on NV and exploration projects in SE Asia. In 2009, John left Tap Oil and joined JX Nippon for onshore Baram Delta exploration and later as the Exploration Manager for Sabah deepwater project. Currently he is the Senior Executive Geoscientist//NV Manager based in KL. John has authored and co-authored over 85 papers for various technical conferences and peer-reviewed journals.

Carlos Giraldo, Independent Consultant

“A review of structural “complexities” and tectonic settings"

Dr Carlos Giraldo is a Senior Geologist Engineer (1981) with 40 years of experience in Exploration and Production, Neotectonics and Seismotectonics. After obtaining a Doctorate in Earth Sciences (1985) he joined PDVSA as a Structural Geologist and Team Leader in 1988 and part-time as Lecturer at UCV (Venezuela). Between 1995 and 1997 he acquired fundamental expertise in Field Operations (BP). Since 2004 (REPSOL) Carlos evaluated exploration blocks in Europe, north Africa and around south-east Asia, Red sea, west Africa, south America and GOM with PETRONAS (2015 - 2020). He is currently an Independent Consultant based in Madrid.

Narender Pendkar, PETRONAS Carigali

“Characterizing Basement Rocks from Recent Exploration Activities in Malaysia: A Short Overview"

Dr. Narender Pendkar is with PETRONAS Carigali, Kuala Lumpur. He has received his Masters from IIT‐Kharagpur (India) and a Ph.D. from University of Delaware (USA). Working as a specialist for nearly three decades in exploration projects in several basins across different countries, his expertise is in primarily clastic reservoirs with a strong interest in basement characterization. He has extensive experience in mapping of clastic and basement outcrops and has offered well-acknowledged internal training courses and field workshops for PGCE & EAGE-APGCE. He has been Technical and Core Committee Member for 2017 and 2019 EAGE-APGCE Conferences.

Duncan Barr (Sedigon Consultants LLC)

“COLLABORATION: The Key to Unlock Small Fields and Convert Marginal to Profitable"

Duncan has over 40 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, much of which was gained in Southeast Asia and Australia, but also in the Middle East, North Africa and Japan.  Despite graduating from Edinburgh University with an honours degree in Geophysics in 1979, Duncan has spent most of his career as a geologist.  His experience has encompassed a number of roles, from offshore mud logger and data engineer, to the laboratory as a sedimentologist and core analyst, and in the office as a regional geologist and asset team leader. Duncan is currently the principal geological consultant for Sedigon Consultants LLC and now lives in Northeast Japan.  However, until recently he worked as a team leader and regional geologist for Carigali Hess in Kuala Lumpur, where he led their near-fields exploration and appraisal effort, as well as providing wide-ranging geological support to the subsurface department. Duncan’s technical interests include prospect evaluation and risk, core and log-based formation evaluation, recognition of reservoir from seismic, and sequence stratigraphic interpretation through the integration of cores and logs.

Robert. J. & Harsanti P. Morley Palynova Ltd.

“Application of sequence biostratigraphic methods in Malaysian basins: a new way of looking at depositional cycles and unconformities from the region."

Bob Morley graduated from Hull University with a PhD in Quarternary palynology of the Sunda region a long time ago. In 1992, he established the geological consultancy PALYNOVA, now in its 29th year, which specialises in high resolution sequence biostratigraphic evaluations of Southeast Asian basins. He has published over 120 papers on Southeast Asian geology and biogeography, and a book ‘Origin and evolution of tropical rain forests’ published by Wiley in 2000. His current aim is to ensure that biostratigraphers across Southeast Asia are using their data effectively to resolve geological issues, especially through the application of the method of Sequence Biostratigraphy.

Santi Morley graduated from Trisakti University in Jakarta majoring in Geology and has been part of PALYNOVA since its beginning. She studied palynology at the Sub-Department of Quarternary Research at the University of Cambridge, working on the Pliocene of Central Java and has since been involved with stratigraphic studies in West Africa and across SE Asia and is a contributor to many papers on the application of palynology as a stratigraphic tool in Southeast Asia.
