Fifth EAGE Conference on Petroleum Geostatistics

27 - 30 November 2023 | Porto, Portugal

Panel discussion

Towards a sustainable era of geoenergy

The Petroleum Geostatistics Conference features a panel discussion with industry experts, professionals in the field of geostatistics to discuss about the transition of the session to geoenergy. In this session, some of the key questions will be addressed

  • What is the role of geostatistics in the energy transition?
  • What are the new modeling and data challenges for geostatistics in the new era of geoenergy?
  • How is deep learning influencing geostatistics?
  • What industry and societal connections are needed for geostatisticians to contribute in the new era in geoenergy?
  • What is the current status of using (geo)statistics in CO2 sequestration and gas storage, wind and solar energy?

The audience will be engaged with thought-provoking questions and answers.

Panelists

The panel discussion features leading experts in the field of geostatistics.

Ana Sousa

Ana has a strong background in Engineering, encompassing several aspects of Energy production and spanning three master’s degrees in civil, petroleum, and mechanical engineering. She has also specialized in specific topics in the energy field, including two post-graduation courses in hydrogen and fuel cell technology, and a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering, at the IST.

Her professional career is multifaceted, complemented by research and practice. The first includes studies in hydraulics and several emerging problems in hydrocarbon production. From the second, one can highlight the design and project management of water use for energy generation and several technical-economic studies in Energy Policies and strategies.

She is a member of the Future Energy Leaders programme from the World Energy Council and also the Secretary-general of the Portuguese Future Energy Leaders programme, promoted by the Portuguese Energy Association.

She is a member of the Portuguese Engineers Institution, where she was awarded the title of expert in Hydraulics & Water Resources, and Energy. Currently, she is an adviser of the Cabinet of the Secretary of State of Energy and Climate.

Amilcar Soares

Amilcar Soares is Full Professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon) and Visiting Professor at some other schools in UAE, Australia and Brasil. He was Distinguished Lecturer ofInternational Association of Mathematical Geosciences. The most of his R&D work is focused on geostatistical and spatial data sciences methods applied to mining and the sustainability of energy resources engineering.

Colin Daly

Colin has a degree in mathematics from Trinity College Dublin and a PhD in Geostatistics from the Ecole des Mines de Paris. He joined BP Research working on algorithmic development and applying the methods in field studies across most of the basins in which BP operated at the time. He moved towards the software development side leaving BP to work initially with Roxar and then with Schlumberger working on commercial software, particularly with the Petrel platform. In recent years he has become increasingly interested in opportunities that Machine Learning brings for spatial probability models in terms of simplifying workflow, increased model integrity and adaptability.
