Geothermal resources represent a solid clean energy alternative, on the way to creating green economies in Latin America. This region has a high potential for this energy resource, which would allow to satisfy its demand in combination with other clean energies, while generating energy independence and economic development in the region.
Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source, not affected by climatic factors, sustainable and resilient, but with respect to other green energies, since this resource is in a geological environment, its use has a high risk, especially in the stage exploration. These characteristic risks, can be adequately reduced and managed through a comprehensive understanding of the nature of geothermal reservoirs.
In the climate change context, geothermal energy has the potential to contribute to sustainable developing as a clean renewable energy source. Nevertheless, it is mandatory to consider political, economic, social, technical, environmental and legal dimensions to guarantee sustainability.
