Energy Transition: How fast really?

Some major oil companies have been making significant announcements on Energy Transition and meeting climate mitigation goals. But the jury is still out on how fast progress will be made and whether the global pandemic will accelerate the process. Our online discussion will explore the reality and what it means for the geoscience community.

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Iain Stewart

Director, Sustainable Earth Institute, University of Plymouth

Iain Stewart is professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth and Director of its Sustainable Earth Institute. His long-standing research interests are in geological hazards, sustainable geoscience, and geo-communication. 

His geo-communication expertise has been built on a 15 year partnership with BBC television presenting popular natural history documentary programmes, including ‘Earth: The Power of the Planet’; ‘Earth: The Climate wars’; ‘How Earth Made Us’, ‘How To Grow A Planet’, ‘Rise of the Continents’ and ‘Planet Oil’.

His active involvement in public engagement has been recognised with an MBE, awards from numerous international geoscience organisations, and his designation as UNESCO Chair in Geoscience and Society. He leads UNESCO's International Geoscience Programme project 685 on Geology and Sustainable Development.


Philip Ringrose

Specialist Reservoir Geoscience (also Adjunct Prof in CO2 Storage at NTNU & ex EAGE President), Equinor

Philip Ringrose is a specialist in CO2 storage and reservoir geoscience at the Equinor Research Centre, Trondheim, Norway. 

He is also Adjunct Professor in CO2 Storage at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He has published widely on many aspects of low-carbon energy, reservoir geoscience and fluid flow in rock media. He is Editor in Chief for the journal Petroleum Geoscience. 


Bob Fryklund

Vice President, Upstream Energy, IHS Markit

Mr. Fryklund is vice president and chief strategist for the Upstream Energy Group at IHS Markit. He is a recognized industry thought leader on all aspects of the Upstream. He advises Boards, CEO's and management teams on strategic direction.

He has been involved in many of the industries pivotal projects- TOR acquisition by Petrobras, a$10 billion arbitration; Oil export approval in the US; and restructuring of several of the industries major operators. He focusses on helping companies understand future trends and how to position themselves in the market. He also provides advice on how to build a better narrative for shareholders. 

He has 40 years in the industry and has been a senior executive at ConocoPhillips as well as at IHS Markit. He sits on four industry Boards and is chair of the supply and demand committee at the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA). He is a frequent industry executive speaker as well as media source for the major outlets. He holds a AB in Geology from Hamilton College and lives in Houston.
