Field Trip 2: Western Serbia: A Never-ending Story

Day 1: Belgrade – Bajina Bašta, (bus/boat) with multiple stops.

The tour starts in Belgrade, visiting the town of Valjevo, famous of its outstanding surroundings, gifts of nature – Gradac and Taor springs. We then move to Debelo Brdo to Bajina Bašta with one rest break and a photo break on the Podrinje Gate viewpoint. 

Arrival in Bajina Bašta approx. at noon and meeting with local tourist guide near the House on the rock viewpoint (small house on the river Drina). Photo break and we continue the trip to Perućac. 

Afterwards, we will board the boat Grizzly 1 for a 2-hour cruise over the lake Perućac with lunch and music on the boat. 

After the cruise, we go by bus to visit the River Vrelo that is probably the shortest river in the world. It is 365 meters long and many say that the Vrelo River is the One-year-long River.


Next we're heading to the monastery Rača (XIIIc) and we will end the day with a visit to one of the famous rakija distilleries, Stara Pesma (The Old Song) for degustation of their products. 

We will have an overnight stay at Zepter Hotel Drina in Bajina Bašta and enjoy a dinner with Serbian folklore live music and local delicacies.

Day 2: Višegrad – Belgrade, (bus/train) with multiple stops.

The second day kicks off with a visit to Višegrad.

During the trip, we will be visiting the Ivo Andrić school and classroom, Andrić Grad (Andrić’s town - Stonetown) and the Old Bridge of Mehmed Paša Sokolović (Bridge over the Drina).

We will stop for lunch and continue to Mokra Gora by bus where we will visit Drvengrad (Wooden Town) in Mećavnik, an ethno village with an urban form and structure. It is located on Mokra Gora’s Mećavnik Hill and was designed by the film director Emir Kusturica.

As we continue, we feel the breath of old times on a train ride to Šargan Eight (old narrow gauge railway over the mountain Šargan which has a shape of number eight. From the beginning of the XX century, this railway has been used to connect Belgrade with Dubrovnik). Then from Mokra Gora to Šargan Vitasi stations, we will pass through 22 tunnels, over five bridges, and overcome the altitude difference of 300 meters, and all that on a total distance of 15,440 meters. 

Lastly, the field trip ends by returning to Belgrade by bus.
