Workshop Description

With the energy transition, the need for new (cost-efficient) technologies to image the subsurface and manage risks related to exploration and exploitation of energy resources is increasing. Drill cuttings – apart from cores – are the only “tangible” rock sample available in most of the wells drilled. Presently, the usage of cuttings to evaluate of uncertainties and risks in the exploration and development of oil & gas, geothermal and other energy resources is very limited. New analytical technologies on micro- and nanoscale has been recently developed which allow unlock significantly more information from rock fragments and drill cuttings.

The planned EAGE workshop attempts to “revive” the usage of drill cuttings and will introduce all conventional and innovative analytical technologies and workflows for the analysis and interpretation of drill cuttings. The workshop will focus on the topics related to the drilling operations, machine learning, production enhancement, and rock characterization for carbon capture or underground storage facilities.

Workshop sub-topics

  1. Technological advancement in drill cuttings sampling
  2. Managing subsurface risk and uncertainty
  3. Production enhancement
