Geosciences in a new energy business landscape: still a matter for Geoscientists, or just a challenge for data and machines?

Workshop Description

This workshop is intended to stimulate a lively discussion across the global geoscientists' community. What is the near to mid-term future for geosciences? On the one side, we have deterministic techniques and methodologies focused on traditional experience and first principles. We interpret historical hard and soft data measured and generated by geoscientists. On the other side, digital transformation adoption implements data-driven ML and DL workflows. They are fast and can avoid human intervention and all cognitive biases that may affect human judgment. However, hybrid models provide AI algorithms implemented within the context of engineering concepts and first principles. Such confrontation is happening in the middle of a profound restructuring of the energy industry, partly driven by the push toward cleaner energy sources and partly by the current reduction in energy demand worldwide. How can the geoscience community adapt its mindset and drive towards decarbonization?
